Author, Michelle D. Sherman, PhD. DeAnne M. Sherman. Publisher, Seeds of Hope USA July 2006 This book attempts to explain mental illness and provide an avenue for young people to list and explore their feelings and emotions and also explores positive ways of coping. Aspects of this book may be useful for some young people when a parent has been recently diagnosed and where the young person is seeking information about their parent's mental illness. The book seeks to normalise feeling and emotional responses of young people coping with a parent's illness, something NNAAMI does and has done in more of an extensive way in our group sessions for many years. Some young people who have been managing a parent’s illness for some time however may find this book less appealing as it is presented in an educational way with lesson sessions and lesson chapters, which some older young people and adults may feel, resembles a teaching or a parental perspective. It names prominent people who have a mental illness, which is great, but I note lacks the ability to name prominent people coping with a parent, with mental illness. The book covers important areas of personal and psychological functioning and may be the catalyst for exploring new ways of coping in the midst of managing a parent's illness A resource that could be valuable tool along the road towards greater independence for many young people.
